So I pray in fear and hope, 2018

Black acrylic and gold glitter glue on canvas

60cm x 75cm

This artwork was inspired by Korea's Samadhi art called Sageong, which uses gold ink to create Buddhism theme paintings. What makes this type of art special is its thinly lined details, which were applied using a soft, pointy calligraphy brush. This artwork is an attempt to imitate such a speciality, yet the medium was changed from gold ink to glitter glue, and the calligraphy brush was replaced by the glue's squeeze bottle.

The concept of this artwork was inspired by an idea in Buddhism, which believes that there are 2 different Deities that exist on one's shoulders. The Deity on the right notes the good actions, while the Deity on the left shoulder sees the sins. When a person reaches the end of their life, the fortune of their next life will be decided based on all the rewards or punishments for what they or had done in the past life.

This work was created under the idea of how one's choices and actions were affected by their religion. Not only has it given people hope and reassurance of a better future, religions also set moral boundaries for their decisions.  Sometimes I wonder, when one decides to choose the good instead of the bad, was it because they intentionally want to be a good person, or was it because of their fear of the "punishments" and their hope for the "rewards"?
